The series would be first conceived on [[August]] [[August 18|18]], [[Pre-2010#2009|2009]] after Michael and Cary's family went into a one-week vacation trip to Hawaii and got inspired by ''Total Drama Island'' and ''Survivor'' so they had the idea to create a Flash-animated web series to YouTube. The series original schedule was month by month starting on the first date, of each month. After the short period of [[Vote|voting]], writing took one week. Initially, the second season wouldn't be revived but was initially replaced with ''IDFB'', on [[September]] [[September 1|1]], [[2016]] after the jacknjellify's AdSense account being reinstated in June 2016.<ref>[https://htwins.net/ htwins.net]: [https://htwins.net/traffic/ 1454 Days of Traffic]</ref> The season ended up in hiatus again, and it still is to this day.

''Battle for BFB'', formerly titled ''Battle for BFDI'', would be premiered on [[November]] [[November 3|3]], [[2017]] and would continue until the split with the release of "[[The Escape from Four]]" on [[March 16]], [[2020]], where ''Battle for Dream Island: The Power of Two'' was announced with over 42 contestants, while ''BFB'' kept only 14 contestants.

''TPOT'' would only premiere on [[January 10]], [[2021]] and the series remained popular. Between to today, the series has begun having notable audiences, especially young.

The series is mostly animated on [[Adobe Animate|Adobe Animate]], previously Macromedia Flash, with a massive number of storyboard artists, voice actors, and animators. The scripts were made using paper drawings through storyboards, on all seasons. More than 40 voice actors worked on the show and over 100 crew members are in the object show. One thing in common of all [[BFDI intro|intros]] for ''BFDI'' (except ''BFB'') is "bass 8ths sample.wav" by beatloaf on Freesound.org, which was first used by the Huang twins as part of the theme of the first season. The series is uploaded through the YouTube channel named "jacknjellify", registered on [[February 4]], 2008.

The music used in the show was originally composed by royalty-free musician [[Kevin MacLeod]] for three seasons until Michael Huang, with his music career, composed the songs for the rest of the current seasons.
